The Perfect Intern

The Perfect InternThe Perfect InternEmployers typically seek candidates who possess previous experience in the field, but you dont need to wait until you are fully employed to gain valuable skills. With three summers and eight college semesters available during your college career, it is quite possible to complete two or three internships before graduating. For those who are set on a particular career, completing one or two internships with different companies or organizations can solidify a vocation. For those who have no idea in what direction they want to go, exposure to different industries might help the decision. Since one of the main goals of completing an internship is securing a job, its important to know how to shine in the workplace. First impressions are crucial, but so is maintaining high professional standards through consistent hard work, a strong commitment, and avoiding getting caught up in office gossip. Here are some tips for a successful internship. Consider Job Shadowing Job shadowing is an activity college students can engage in to find out more about specific careers. Job shadowing entails observing another professional on the job, and shadowing assignments usually lasts for one day to several weeks. Start Your Search Early Finding the perfect internship is not always easy. There is strong competition for summer internships. One of the best ways to make sure that you get a summer internship in your field is to begin looking early. Opportunities in finance, journalism, and government often have application deadlines as early as October. By preparing your resume and cover letter in advance, you will be ready to send your application as internships are posted. Research Your Industry and the Company Before you attend an interview, learn as much about the company as you can by visiting the companys website and its LinkedIn page. Also research the companys employees. By using the Advanced button on the top right of your LinkedIn page, you may even find alumni from your college that you can connect with before interviewing or starting your internship or job. Be Commited By showing up for work on-time and not bolting out the door at the end of the day, you are showing your commitment to doing a good job rather than just punching a time card. Enjoy your job, and find better ways to complete tasks. This will get you notice by supervisors. Since internships are an excellent way to train and evaluate potential future employees, its important that you ask for feedback to gauge your performance. The information garnered will help you to make improvements. As an intern, you are expected to ask questions. By doing so, you are showing your employer that you are motivated and ready to take aktion and apply that knowledge. Be a Team Player Although employers want to see hard work and a strong work ethic, they also require people who get along with their supervisors and coworkers. It is during lunch and other more soc ial experiences where you can begin developing relationships that make for a happier and more enjoyable workplace. When hiring, managers look for individuals who they consider a good fit aswell as those who possess the knowledge and skills to do the job. Build Strong Professional Relationships and Find Yourself a Mentor Building a strong professional network is key to getting ahead in your career. Someone you previously worked may at some point provide support and information on your potential next job. Find yourself a mentor who can support you in moving ahead in your current or future job. Finding a good mentor can make your first years on the job less stressful and allows you to tap into the wisdom and experience of someone already successful in the field. Avoid geschftszimmer Politics andGossip Avoid gossiping either in or outside of the office. Aligning yourself with a select group of co-workers sets you up for potential problems with other members of the group. As a ma ture employee who wants to get ahead, remain unbiased and out of the politics. Keep in Touch Once Your Internship Is Over The first thing an intern should do once their internship is over is to send a thank you note to their supervisor and anyone else who played a key role in making their internship a success. Keeping in touch with these contacts once you return to college is also a great idea to help maintain important contacts and to keep abreast of future openings. The Internship Success Guide provides additional information on things you can do to ensure that your internship is successful.

Smart Robots for Picking Fruit

Smart Robots for Picking Fruit Smart Robots for Picking Fruit Harvesting high-value crops like wine grapes is a time-consuming, laborious task. Imagine if a robot could be designed that would not only know which grape is ready for picking and which isnt, but would also have the ability to gently grasp the fruit and remove it from the vine without damaging the grape. That robotic technology currently is being developed by a European consortium consisting of engineers and other scientists from universities and private companies across the continent. The group is well on its way to developing the technology for a robot to do not only basic routine chores for crops such as peppers and apples in addition to grapes, but may be able to identify and pick ripe fruit and target spray to specific areas of plants as well. Different universities using a sortiment of technologiesincluding nanotechnology, materials science, mechatronics, and computer scienceare working on different aspects of the p roject, which has been divided into 13 work packages.Robot prototype for harvesting fruit. Image Clever Robots for Crops Agricultural Tasks The Institute of Applied Mechanics of the Technical University of Munich is responsible for package No. 3, which includes the robotic arm, with the objectives of designing, modeling, manufacturing, and optimization of low-cost, lightweight, modular and compliant manipulators with exchangeable end-effectors and their motion control. The institute has developed a prototype for a multi-purpose agricultural manipulator, which can be used for grapes, peppers, and apples. However, different types of grippers, or end-effectors, with different cutting devices must be developed for handling each crop. Other universities involved include Israels Ben Gurion University of the Negev, which is developing intelligent sensing and manipulation algorithms for the robot, and the University of Ljubljana,in Slovenia, is leading the work on the sprayer. The project, called Clever Robots for Crops (cRops), began in 2010 with funding from the European Union and is coordinated by Dutch-based Wageningen University Research Centre. The projects first demonstration of how the systems all work together is planned for later this year, with the completion of the project scheduled for 2014. After that, it is not clear what the next steps will be and when such robots may be available commercially even if the research phase is successful.Agrobots strawberry harvester can determine whether the fruit is ready for picking. Image Agrobot If all goes well, the robot will be able to detect the fruit, determine whether it is ripe and if so, approach the fruit, grasp it, and gently detach it. Down the road, the work may be able to be used for other agricultural applications where robots have not been employed as much as in the manufacturing field, for one reason because agricultural tasks are rarely strictly repetitive but require sophisticated learning and sensi ng technology. Modular konzept Prof. Yael Edan, Ben Gurion University team leader of the cRops project, says the main contributions that this project will make are the development of a new modular mechanical design and the algorithms that will allow the robot to adapt to varying conditions. We plan to develop a plug-and-play concept, she adds. Of the key components (the mechanical manipulator, grippers for grasping the fruits and vegetables, sensors for fruit detection and ripeness detection, and algorithms for sensing and learning capabilities), the most challenging are related to sensors and algorithms for fruit detection, she says. An agricultural robot must be equipped with intelligence so as to be able to robustly operate in the unstructured, dynamic and hostile agricultural environment, she explains. Mechanical and industrial engineers are involved in everything from the development of intelligent grasping to the development of a platform for the robot that will adapt and acco mmodate various modular devices, such as sprayers and harvesters. This is not the first project involving such use of robots in agriculture, but it may be the most ambitious. A Spanish company, Agrobot, sells a robotic strawberry harvester that locates the berries, analyzes each fruit, and determines whether its ready for picking based on its size and color, and similar work also focusing on strawberries has been conducted in Japan. The British firm CMW Horticulture sells a crop-spraying robot for greenhouses and nurseries. Some experts predict that robotic devices will be doing much of the work on farms by the middle of this century as driverless tractors and machines that can identify and zap weeds are also coming down the pike. Nancy S. Giges is an independent writer. An agricultural robot must be equipped with intelligence so as to be able to robustly operate in the unstructured, dynamic and hostile agricultural environment.Prof. Yael Edan, Ben Gurion University

Why City Governments Give Tax Incentives to Businesses

Why City Governments Give Tax Incentives to BusinessesWhy City Governments Give Tax Incentives to BusinessesAttracting businesses, keeping them and getting them to expand operations often involves a city providing tax incentives. While this seems to some like corporate welfare, cities do not simply give away money to corporations in these deals. Cities weigh the expected benefits with expected costs to determine whether they should proceed with a particular tax incentive package. It would be nice for citizens if local governments paid them to stay maintain residence within a city, but thats just not going to happen. One household coming to a city is not going to make a noticeable impact on the citys economy. Hundreds coming to a city will. Cities usually task their economic development directors with crafting policies that allow for cities and businesses to enter into mutually beneficial agreements on tax incentives. Cities adopt these policies so that they do not have to go back to the drawing board each time a business wants to come to town or expand. Having tax incentive policies allows a city to be up-front with businesses, accountable to citizens and mitigate the appearance of cronyism. Policies allow cities to stick to what they have already determined in their best interest while enticing new businesses and retaining existing ones. Leveraging Economic Benefits When businesses can boost the local economy, they use that as leverage. They even play cities off one another like an individual planning to buy a car will play two dealerships off one another. As soon as one city offers five years of tax abatement, a business will go to other cities seeking ten years. Businesses try to get cities to offer more than what their policies provide. City leaders must weigh the pros and cons of sticking to policy versus offering more for a really good deal. When added up over time, providing tax incentives is bad for taxpayers, but in individual situations, cities wi ll compete with each other. When the cities are located in different states, state officials may lend a hand in attracting a business. As long as cities are willing to play the game, businesses will keep seeking tax incentives for activities they would likely do without any assistance from local government. While tax incentives are an important reason businesses choose to locate ?in ?one city over another, businesses also consider non-financial factors in their decisions. Political climate, housing prices, education, parks, and arts are other inputs into the decision-making process. Analyzing the Costs and Benefits When tax incentives are considered, city staff project what the city stands to gain by the business coming, staying or expanding. These benefits are predominantly property tax revenue and other tax revenue associated with added employees that are expected to relocate to the city or be hired from the citys existing population. If a new business buys a tract of land and builds a factory on it, the business increases the citys property tax base. The factory adds value to the otherwise vacant land. The business may propose to the city to allow it to pay a reduced property tax rate for the first few years the factory is open. This helps the business lower its tax liability while other operating costs run unusually high. Keeping with the factory example, say that the factory expects to employ 1,000 people, 900 of whom are expected to be people who move to the town because of factory jobs. The city will experience an increase in property values because of all the new home buyers. It will also receive more sales tax and anwender fee revenue because these people move to town. Such benefits are considered along with costs the city will incur because of the business activity. Those costs include infrastructure expansions and additional city employees necessary to serve the growth in population. Infrastructure costs could include widening streets, installin g more street lighting, extending sewer lines and building new fire and police stations. Additional city employees could include more police officers, firefighters, and employees needed to support a larger organization such as accountants and administrative assistants. Doing the Deal Cities try to stick to their economic development policies because those policies have been thoroughly vetted through economic analysis, legal opinions, and the local political climate. Cities risk making mistakes when they move away from what they have carefully planned. If a city believes a tax incentive package is a good deal and that other cities may entice the business away, the city will likely make the deal even if they have to deviate from policy. The citys goal is to at least break even. City officials want the expected revenue to exceed the costs of foregone tax revenue and added operating costs. The citys economic development director is usually the citys chief negotiator in tax incentive deals. When the economic development director believes that straying from policy may be prudent, the director gathers input from other local officials and business interests such a local economic development boards, school officials and chambers of commerce. When policy is followed, additional input is not really necessary. The city manager approves any deals before they are submitted to the city council for final approval.

What to Do If You Get Job Interviews But Not Job Offers

What to Do If You Get Job Interviews But Not Job OffersWhat to Do If You Get Job Interviews But Not Job OffersCongratulations You know how to write a resume that will get you past the eyes of recruiters and land you an interview. The problem? You never get past the first round of interviews. Here are four ways to better reflect the person in your resume and ace the interview.Articulate concrete examples in your interview Sit down with your resume and be totally honest with yourself. Can you back up each skill and role responsibility with a specific project or experience? If youre drawing blanks, that skill probably shouldnt be on your resume. Edit your resume and only include skills, responsibilities and accomplishments for which you can give an examples of or can go into great detail on the accomplishment or responsibility. When recalling your past work projects, make sure you dig deep enough to answer these three questionsWhy do you think the project was successful? What were some of your struggles during the project and how did you overcome? What would you do differently if you had to do the project again? The interviewer will want to go into detail on the bullet points of your resume, so make sure youre prepared by thinking of concrete examples that show off your skills. Do a run-through with a friendPreparing for an interview by yourself is a start, but practicing interview questions with a friend will really help you see where you can improve. A friend can offer constructive feedback and catch things that you wouldnt notlageice. Maybe you dont notice that you play with your hair or that your leg shakes uncontrollably. You might also come off as not excited for a role or too arrogant, and a friend can help you see how you present yourself in a mock interview. It will also be a good time to fine-tune your answers to common interview questions and practice thinking on your feet by having your friend ask you questions not on your list. Dress appropriately and be preparedYou can answer every question eloquently and articulately, but the interviewer may not notice if you dont dress for the job. This might sound obvious, but a lot of people dont take care of the details in their interview outfit.. Interviewing is like dating, and hiring managers want to have someone who looks put togethernot someone with food in their teeth or uncombed hair. Also, dont confuse casual with sloppy. Be certain that all of your clothes fit well and are wrinkle-free.Ask for feedback after an interviewThe final tip is even if you dont get the job. Always send a prompt thank you e-mail, and if you feel comfortable, ask for feedback. A lot of interviewers are busy and might dismiss your e-mail, but theres always the chance that theyll respond and offer insightful tips from a hiring managers perspective. If they do offer feedback, send a thank-you and really take their advice to heart. Its important to not be discouraged and take the whole interview process as a cha nce to learn and grow. Youre one step closer to landing a job.

But trust me, you will thank yourself laterEarly mornings are the perfect time to sneak in a workout, go for a walk or maybe even just have a little alone time to reflect on the day ahead. Treat those precious hours as me time and enjoy them. You will be far more motivated throughout the day if you have started your day off on a positive note.Starting your day before the sun rises and before the rest of the household is up and andrangning can help save you time in your daily life. If you work from home, its the best time to sit down and tackle those annoying emails and complicated work tasks. Studies show that our brain is far more switched on and alert first thing in the morning, so pour yourself a cup of coffee and get down to business.Tip 2 Plan to succeedIts time to pull out your coloured pens and stickers ad practice your funky letteri ng, Just kidding Instead, invest in a 2019 plannerthat is functional and plan out the daily tasks you want to achieve.By organising and time blocking your day, you can schedule those hard-to-finish tasks into times you know you are more alert and prepared. It also allows you to keep stock of what you had planned to complete by certain times, ensuring you keep yourself on track. Assign rankings for the tasks you wish to achieve for the day and allocate time accordingly. Each evening, spend 10 minutes planning out the schedule for the next day. Take the time to think about what you would like to achieve the following day and how you would like your day to run and time block certain events with extra timing if needed. For example, a 30-minute trip to the dentist for an appointment at 2 pm would be time blocked from 130 pm till 3 pm to allow for travel time.Spend another 10 minutes each morning updating your daily schedule and checking what you have planned for the day. That way, you can be truly organised and prepared for wherever the day takes you.Tip 3 Organise your morning routine before bedEver have one of those mornings where you faff around for 20 minutes looking for a certain work shirt, only to discover its in the wash? Eliminate that time wastage by planning out your morning routine before you go to bed at night.Choose your outfit for the next day and lay it out ready the night before with shoes, socks and underwear all included. If possible, have a shower before you go to bed so you dont waste time standing around as the clock is ticking. If you are one of those people that has to shower each morning, put an alarm on your phone for 5 minutes, get in, wash and get out before the timer goes off.Invest in a great hair dryer that dries your hair quickly or towel dry and style, wet hair looks are all the rage at the moment and will save time. Spend time on the weekend practising your current makeup look and try to bring the time it takes down, a quick five-mi nute look with some foundation, a bronzer as eyeshadow and contour plus a bright lip looks fantastic and gets you out the door faster. If possible, try and eat your breakfast on your commute. A smoothie, overnight oats or some fresh fruit and yoghurt are all great breakfast ideas that can be prepared the night before and eaten on the move.Tip 4 Keep your phone out of reachSo often we grab our phone just to quickly check social media and then - whoa where did that half an hour disappear to? Keep your phone in your handbag and avoid checking it throughout the day.Breaking the screen addiction can be hard, so dont expect just to just go cold turkey on social media. Give yourself a goal that you are only going to check your phone a certain amount of times each day and slowly reduce that amount down until you are satisfied with your usage levels. Schedule in a 10-minute Facebook session during your lunch break but avoid the temptation to avoid checking your phone all the time.If you have an iPhone or Google Pixel, you can actually check your daily screen time which is extremely eye-opening Track your usage for a week and you will honestly be shocked at the amount of time wasted looking at your phone.Tip 5 Plan ahead your meals for the weekWhether you meal prep on the weekend or just plan and shop for your weekly meals during the weekend and cook them every night, having an idea of what you are eating for dinner each night can drastically reduce time wasted arguing about what to eat.Planning your weekly meals and shopping before cooking can also help you save money and eat healthier, too. Spend time each Sunday creating a plan for the week. If you struggle with inspiration, create a theme for each night - for example, Meatless Mondays, Taco Tuesdays and so on, or check out Pinterest for an abundance of recipes for every diet type, cooking time frame and flavour combination imaginable. Its also a great idea to plan for extra portions and take those for lunch each day . That way, you dont have to stuff around wondering what you could possibly have for lunch or sit down to a sad sandwich whilst you watch your co-worker eat the beautiful pasta they had for dinner the night before drooling with envy.Tip 6 Avoid the TV trapDo you get home from work, sit down on the couch for a few minutes and then end up wasting the rest of your evening watching a Netflix marathon or catching up on the latest Kardashian drama?Avoid this time-wasting trap by simply finding something better to do with your time. Put on a podcast, audiobook or some music and spend those after work hours getting some housework done. Blast some upbeat 90s tunes and dance around the house whilst you dust, clean and sweep. Its amazing what a difference music can make to your mood and the work you can get done when you are singing along to your jamTip 7 Get one cleaning task done before bedBefore you finish up for the evening, select one cleaning task that needs to be done and complete it be fore you head off to bed. It could be something as simple as putting on a quick load of laundry, unpacking the dishwasher, wiping over all the kitchen surfaces or anything else you know should be dealt with.Completing one task per evening means there is always something being completed and you reduce the overall amount of cleaning that you have to do at a later date. A clean house leads to a clean, and restful mind and a happier deeper sleep.Tip 8 Give yourself some Me TimeSchedule a block of time each evening just for you and use this time to relax and recount the day that was. Spend time doing self-care practices like reading, writing, knitting, practising yoga, meditating or something that you find completely relaxing. To really get the best out of each day, you first need to ensure that you are getting the best out of yourselfTip 9 Go to bed earlyIf possible, try and be in bed by 1030 at the latest - PJs on, teeth brushed, face cleaned, lights off. No lying in bed watching tv or sitting on your phone Getting into a routine of going to bed at a reasonable time makes it far easier to get up earlier in the morning. Our brains are far less active in the evening and most often time is just wasted watching TV. So, going to bed earlier and using those early hours when you are more alert is going to help you be more productive.Creating a bedtime routine also greatly helps you wind down for bed. For example, taking a few minutes to wash your face and apply your moisturiser in the same way each evening can eventually place you in an almost meditative state completely relaxing you and removing any stress from your mind which may prevent sleep.Time management can be a constant struggle, but using the time saving techniques above can help you manage it. However, its also important to remember that at the end of the day, life is more important than the emails sitting in your inbox or the load of washing that needs to be folded. Sometimes, its worth saying to hell with i t all and spending a day down at the beach enjoying yourselfYou can check out Georgias blog The Hunt Life here or follow her onInstagram, Pinterest orTwitter. This article first appeared on A Girl in Progress.
